There are a number internationally recognized universities in the nation of Australia. The Times Higher Education Supplement rated the top universities worldwide, placing three of Australia's top universities among the top-21 universities in the world. U.S. news and World Report likewise placed these schools among the best in the world with the same three making the list of the top-40 universities worldwide.

    • The University of Melbourne is Australia's best university according to the Times Higher Education rankings. The university was ranked No. 13 in the world overall. U.S. News & World Report, however, ranked Melbourne as the 36th highest rated program in the world, making it second among Australian universities. Despite the discrepancy, it is clear the University of Melbourne is one of the best universities in the country. The university was founded in 1853 and has, since then emerged as one of Australia's leading institutions of higher education. The university is composed of 12 different schools and faculties in the disciplines of education, science, law, architecture, the arts, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, business and economics, music, the graduate school and the school of land and environment.

    University of Sydney

    • The Times Supplement ranked the University of Sydney as Australia's second highest rated university at number 15 in the world. U.S. News & World Report ranked the university in a tie at number 36 with the University of Melbourne and France's École Polytechnique. Similar to the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney was founded in 1850 primarily as a secular institution, one of the first of its kind in the world. The university enrolls over 47,000 students each year and boasts over 170,000 alumni across the world. The university is composed of 16 different colleges and schools that include the academic disciplines of the arts and humanities, agriculture, food and natural resources, architecture, dentistry, economics and business, education and social work, engineering, health science, law, medicine, music, nursing, pharmacy, science, veterinary science and the visual arts.

    Australian National University

    • The Australian National University is the third highest rated university on the Times Higher Education list at No. 21. U.S. News, however, ranked the program No. 17, making it the highest rated university on their list. Founded much later than the universities in Sydney and Melbourne (1946), the university has nonetheless emerged as a leader in Australia's higher education system. The school is also much smaller than its counterparts at just 16,700 students annually. The university's programs are divided up among its eight different academic divisions: creative arts, engineering and related technologies, health and medical studies, environmental sciences and resource management, information technology and computer science, management and commerce, society and culture and the natural and physical sciences.
