Established in 1850, the University of Sydney has the motto, translated from the Latin, “The constellation is different, but the disposition is the same.” The motto suggests that this university continues the traditions of the western hemisphere, namely Cambridge and Oxford, in a different constellation, the eastern hemisphere. A bachelor's degree in art history requires 72 credit points, as well as a senior-level thesis. The art history program also offers master's and doctoral degrees. The university has several interdisciplinary research centers including the Australian Centre for Asian Art and Archaeology, the Centre for Celtic Studies, and the Centre for Medieval Studies.
