The Best Art Universities in the World

In a recent article, the New York Times pointed out that, due to economic hardships, the value of arts programs are now being questioned. “The humanities are under greater pressure than ever to justify their existence to administrators, policy makers, students and parents.” This uncertainty poses a problem for students, recent graduates and education professionals. Because of their rich endowments, many of the top universities are still able to offer great art educations.
  1. University of Sydney

    • Established in 1850, the University of Sydney has the motto, translated from the Latin, “The constellation is different, but the disposition is the same.” The motto suggests that this university continues the traditions of the western hemisphere, namely Cambridge and Oxford, in a different constellation, the eastern hemisphere. A bachelor's degree in art history requires 72 credit points, as well as a senior-level thesis. The art history program also offers master's and doctoral degrees. The university has several interdisciplinary research centers including the Australian Centre for Asian Art and Archaeology, the Centre for Celtic Studies, and the Centre for Medieval Studies.
