List of Top Biotechnology Universities in the World

The field of biotechnology is related to the addition of living organisms into facets of medical technology and engineering. Biotechnology is utilized across a wide range of biological, scientific and industrial disciplines, including preventive medicine, life science and agriculture. According to a 2006 report by the independent economic think tank Milken Institute, American institutions hold eight of the top 10 positions in the world rankings of biotech universities.

    The University of Tokyo

    • The University of Tokyo School of Engineering's Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology is composed of 20 different research laboratories, five of which are dedicated exclusively to biologically inspired chemistry and biotechnology. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. The school's undergraduate program is grounded in core coursework of fundamental chemistry, including physical chemistry and quantum chemistry as well as organic chemistry and reaction engineering.     University College London

    • University College London offers an expansive and diverse load of coursework in its undergraduate biotechnology degree path. The three-year program is rooted in the basic principles and practices of experimental biochemistry, in addition to an introduction to biochemical engineering. The program also allows for investigation into the role of industry in bioprocesses. A research project or literature review in a biotechnology-related topic is required for the program's third and final year. Many graduates go on to graduate work in UCL's Biochemical Engineering, Biomedicine and Tissue Engineering programs.
