List of the top UK Universities

The United Kingdom is home to some of the world's most widely known and highly regarded universities, including the oldest surviving university in the English-speaking world, Oxford. Due to how esteemed many UK universities are, admission can be extremely competitive, as students begin preparing for admission beginning in early childhood.
  1. University of Oxford

    • The University of Oxford is one of the world's oldest universities; the exact date of its inception is widely debated, but there is evidence that teaching began in Oxford as early as 1029. Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford takes place in tutorials, in which individual or small groups of students meet with a professor on a weekly basis. Unlike many other universities, Oxford is considered a \"federation,\" consisting of more than 40 individual colleges and halls. Oxford's academic year is divided into three terms: Michaelmas, which lasts from October until December; Hilary Term, which goes from January through March; and Trinity Term, which goes from April until June.

    University of Cambridge

    • The University of Cambridge is England's second oldest university and the fourth oldest in all of Europe. The University was created in 1209, after a group of angry academics left Oxford after a dispute with the townsfolk. Paradigm-shifting discoveries have taken place at Cambridge, including Newton's discovery of the laws of motion, Francis Bacon's derivation of the scientific method, and Crick and Watson's development of the DNA model. Cambridge houses 31 colleges, including three women's-only schools. Much like Oxford, courses at Cambridge mainly meet in \"supervisions,\" which are small group sessions with professors.

    University of St. Andrews

    • The University of St. Andrews is Scotland's oldest university, established in the early 15th century. St. Andrews was ranked as the third best university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge. Unlike Oxbridge, St. Andrews runs on two traditional terms: Martinmas and Candlemas. The University is divided into four faculties: Arts, Divinity, Medicine and Science, with a total enrollment of 6,000 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students. About half of students live in residence halls, while the rest live off campus in apartments or houses. Like other top UK schools, St. Andrews has a set of wacky traditions, such as the Raisin Weekend and the May Dip, when students wake up at dawn and run into the North Sea.
