List of Top London Universities

There are 40 higher education institutions throughout London, England. Many of those make up the University of London, a federal university made up of 19 mostly self-governing individual colleges and institutes. Several of London's universities are highly regarded, with two appearing on the QS World University Ranking's top 10 list. With prestigious institutions and all the attractions of a capital city, London is an attractive place to study.
  1. University College London

    • University College London, or UCL, is an individual institute of London University. UCL occupies several campuses in central London, with the main one being on Gower Street in Bloomsbury, close to the British Museum, British Library and Royal College of Art.

      UCL was founded in 1826 as Great Britain's first secular university--in adherence with the beliefs of the university's \"spiritual father,\" the philosopher Jeremy Bentham, that education should be available to all. In 1878, UCL became the first institution in the country to admit women on equal terms with men.

      UCL is a multidisciplinary university and offers courses in the arts, sciences, social sciences and biomedicine. The 2009 Times Higher Education-QS rankings ranked UCL as the fourth best university in the world, and the university has produced 21 Nobel Prize winners. Notable alumni include Mahatma Gandhi and Alexander Graham Bell.

    Imperial College

    • Imperial College places fifth on the 2009 World University Rankings--tied with Oxford University. Imperial College was established in 1907 and was a part of London University until 2007. The university is situated in central London, with its main campus located in the South Kensington district.

      Imperial College is a largely science-based university, and it specializes in medicine, science, engineering and business. Significant alumni include Nobel laureate Sir George Paget Thompson, and former faculty include Sir Alexander Fleming (also a Nobel Prize winner), who discovered penicillin and was Professor of Bacteriology from 1928 to 1948.

    King's College London

    • The 2009 World University Rankings place King's College as the 23rd best university in the world. King's College is part of the University of London and was founded by King George IV in 1829. The university is spread over five campuses, with one being on The Strand, one of central London's main streets and home to several mansions, churches and theaters.

      King's College offers a wide range of programs, including arts and humanities, psychiatry, law and medicine. Notable alumni include W. Somerset Maugham and Virginia Woolf, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Desmond Tutu.
