List of Top 10 Universities in India

The website hindustanlink.com lists the top 10 colleges, schools, and universities in India. Eleven are actually listed, but five of these are the different locations of the Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur). Except for Delhi, the six others in the list all come from locations that are different from the five locations of the Indian Institute of Technology. (Ultaranchal, Rajahstan, Chennai, New Delhi, Delhi and Mumbai). Three from the 11 universities listed are shown below, each of them outstanding in their own fields of excellence.
  1. University of Roorkee

    • Roorkee College was established in 1847, was renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854, and was given University status in 1948. It is among the best technological institutions in India and is a trendsetter in education and research in science, technology and engineering. Bachelor's Degree courses are offered in 10 disciplines of engineering and architecture, while 55 postgraduate degree courses are offered in engineering, applied science and architecture and planning. The university also has facilities for doctoral work. It admits students through examinations conducted at centers all over India. Starting with three (civil, electrical and mechanical engineering), it now has 17 teaching departments. It receives funding from the government for infrastructure in engineering education and research. Students are required to reside in campus, with the university providing separate residential facilities for bachelors, female students and married students.

    Jawaharlal Nehru University

    • This university opened its doors in the early 1970s. It has a mode of instruction which encourages students to explore their own creativity. It has a 1,000-acre campus that draws students from all over India and from all levels of society. Annual admission tests are held at 37 centers. The underprivileged and ethnic groups are allocated 22.5 percent of seats, with 10 percent for overseas students. The university has students' hostels and faculty residences. Interaction between and among students and teachers are encouraged as a medium for generating and transmitting knowledge. Several centers in this school have been declared national centers of excellence: Historical Studies, Study of Social Systems, Political Studies, Economic Studies and Planning, and Study of Regional Development, all of which are in the School of Social Sciences. Three Science Schools (Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Environmental Sciences) have also received recognition as Centers for Excellence.

    University of Delhi

    • The University of Delhi is known for its high standards of teaching and research. Established in 1922, it is now one of the largest universities in India, with 14 faculties, 86 academic departments, 79 colleges, and about 20,000 students. The University has a south campus for its Arts and Social Sciences, an east campus for the University College of Medical Science and a west campus for Engineering and Technology. Six centers of advanced studies were awarded to this university by the University Grants Commission - Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Sociology. The University has 15 libraries and a number of sophisticated research instruments which are used by the University and by other Delhi institutions. The University provides several amenities for its staff and students: a post office and a bank, a bus pass and railway reservation counter, a cooperative store, a health center, a computer center, a university press and a university guest house.
