List of the UGC Recognized Universities in India

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is a grant-giving agency in India that promotes university education, determines the standards and rules, and serves as a link between the government and the institutions. Universities recognized and funded by the UGC have maintained excellence in educating their students.
  1. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

    • The ideals of India’s first prime minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, inspired the founding of JNU. Based on his principles of national integration, secularism and democracy, the university, located in New Delhi, draws students from different lifestyles.

      JNU offers around 13 areas of specialization, which include Arts and Aesthetics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Physical Science, and special centers for the study of Sanskrit and molecular medicine. UGC has declared JNU’s Center of Historical Studies, Study of Social Systems, Political Studies, Economic Studies and Planning, among others, as “Centers of Excellence.”

    Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

    • IGNOU is popular for its unconventional and flexible method of instruction, and specializes in distance education, self-instructional materials and multimedia counseling. Students study and collect credits at their own pace. Computer assignments, practical experiments, project work and a term-end examinations are integral evaluation methods adapted by the university.

      Along with offering doctoral, masters and bachelors degrees in several fields, IGNOU also provides a wide range of non-credit programs such as computer literacy, desktop publishing, communication skills, garment stitching and retail marketing.

    Visva Bharati University

    • Visva Bharati University began as the Santi Niketan, a small school that imparted the intrinsic values of ancient education, fine arts and music. The vision of India’s Nobel laureate and founder of Santi Niketan, Rabindranath Tagore changed it from a center “for the coordinated study of the different cultures” to Vishva Bharati University, a central university.

      Ensconced in the rural area of Birbhum, the Visva Bharati University is about 160 km. (99 miles) from Kolkata. Recognized by the UGC, Visva Bharati University offers doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees, along with several diploma and certificate courses.
