List of Private Universities in India

The establishment of universities in India has largely been the purview of the Indian government until the early 2000s. The growth of India's economy along with the inability of the government to increase expenditures has led to increased importance of private universities to complement state-funded institutions. As of June 2009, the University Grants Commission, or UGC, recognized 42 such universities within the various states in India.
