List of Universities in Taiwan

Universities in Taiwan are especially focused on academic fields that involve mathematics and science. Engineering degrees account for over a quarter of the bachelor degrees awarded in Taiwan. Yet there are over 100 public and private institutions of higher education in the country that offer the full gamut of university majors and degrees.
  1. National Taiwan University

    • As the most prestigious institution of higher education in Taiwan, this national university concentrates on the fields of humanities, social sciences, basic sciences and applied sciences. Its 11 colleges, 54 departments, 96 graduate institutes and 4 research centers offer diplomas in over 100 fields of study to over 29,000 students. It is ranked as one of the best universities in the world by both Times Higher Education and Global University Ranking, as of 2009. The school has produced a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry and a president of the Republic of China.

    National Cheng Kung University

    • Situated in Tainan City, this top school was established 1931 and has sought to be a pioneer in science and technology. The university maintains high reputations in engineering, science, management, medicine and planning and design. National Cheng Kung University is also a major research hub, with facilities that include 82 graduate institutes, 54 research centers and a major education center.

    National Chiao Tung University

    • As Taiwan’s oldest university, this public institution has become known around the world, drawing students from over 42 countries. It is located in Hsinchu, which is called the Silicon Valley of Asia. According to the school, approximately 65% of CEOs and general managers of high-tech companies in the region are alumni. It is renowned for its research efforts in computer science, electrical engineering and social sciences.

    National Sun Yat-Sen University

    • Established in 1980, this school has grown to become one of the top seven research-oriented universities in Taiwan, according to the country's Minister of Education. It is a public university located in Kaohsiung. Its strengths include oceanography, engineering, business and management. Numerous Nobel Prize winners who attended there include Gao Xingjian, the prize winner for Literature in 2000.

    National Taiwan Normal University

    • Another one of Taiwan's elite institutions, this university maintains a strong focus on the arts, education and the social sciences. It is best known for its Mandarin Training Center, the largest and most well-known language center in Taiwan for students who wish to study Mandarin. The university enrolls 11,000 students, of which approximately 1,500 are international.
