The University of Malaya is Malaysia's most prominent research institution. The university currently enrolls over 27,000 students, about 3000 of whom are international students, and offers an interdisciplinary approach to higher education. Located in Kuala Lampur, the university traces its roots back to the early 1900s with the establishment of its medical school. It reached its present location in 1959, a 900-acre campus located in the midst of the city. The university currently lists 12 faculties and two academies (Islamic and Malay studies). Faculties include the arts and sciences, medicine, law, science, language and linguistics, economics and administration, education, dentistry, computer science and information technology, business, built environment (architecture, surveying, and so on), and engineering.

Located in Penang, the Science University of Malaysia (Universiti Sains Malaysia) was founded in 1969, making it the second oldest public university in Malaysia. The university currently offers degrees in one of four major academic divisions: the arts and sciences, health sciences, the sciences (biological and physical), and technology (engineering, architecture, etc.). Like the University of Malaysia, USM offers students an interdisciplinary approach to higher education by allowing students to take courses between different departments. As a research institution, one in six USM students is either a master's or doctoral level student working on a research project. Its primary areas of innovation include the biomedical sciences, engineering technology, and information and communication technology.

The National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) was founded in 1970 and is located in Bangi, Selangor.
