List of Private Universities in Malaysia

Malaysia, a former British colony, gained its independence in 1957. After decades of tension with nearby Indonesia and Singapore, Malaysia has revitalized its economy as a top producer of raw materials like rubber, palm oil and tin. On average, Malaysians spend 13 years in school and nearly 90 percent of the population in literate, according to the CIA. Universities in Malaysia are divided into public, which are funded by the government, and private, which came into existence in 1996 with the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act.

    • Multimedia University was Malaysia's first private university, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Two-and-a-half year diploma courses and four-year degree courses require O Levels or A Levels, or the appropriate international equivalent like SAT scores. Students from more than 66 countries study at MU, which requires all students to have a strong proficiency in English.

    Open University Malaysia

    • Open University Malaysia, located in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, was founded in 20000. It has the motto motto, "University for All," promoting for the ideal that all students who want to attend university should be able to, regardless of economic or social factors. Classes are available both in a traditional campus setting and through distance learning. Majors are divided among six schools: Business and Management, Science and Technology, Applied Social Sciences, Education and Languages, Information Technology and Multimedia Communication and Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. The university also offers 20 graduate-degree programs.

    Nilai University College

    • Students at Nilai University College take classes in one of six disciplines: Allied Health Sciences, Business, Foundation Studies, Hospitality and Tourism, Humanities and Social Sciences or Science and Technology. The school encourages students to get involved outside of classes in recreational activities like talent nights, 27-hole golf and dance competitions. The majority of students live on the college's 105-acre campus.

    International Medical University

    • The International Medical University was the first private medical college in Malaysia. A range of undergraduate and postgraduate tracks are offered, from traditional medical fields like Dentistry and Pharmacy to alternative treatments such as Chinese Medicine. Students also volunteer in community outreach through the "Kampung Angkat" project, which provides free health screening and education to a nearby orphanage.
