Florida is the home of several high-quality private colleges. Private colleges offer a number of advantages to college students despite their generally higher tuition costs. Students benefit from smaller class sizes, greater access to faculty members and, in some cases, a higher quality of education. Although private universities in the state of Florida have stiff competition from a number of highly regarded public colleges and universities, they offer students that choose to enroll a top-notch education.

  1. Ave Maria University

    • Ave Maria is a private Catholic university located in Ave Maria, Florida. The university was founded in 2003 and is the first new Catholic university in the United States since 1963. Annual enrollment at the university only averages about 600 full-time students, but a wide variety of degree plans are possible through the university curriculum. The school sponsors a graduate degree program in the field of Christian theology. At the undergraduate level, Ave Maria offers degrees in literature, math, physics, economics, theology, history, music, political science and Christian literature. In addition to its academic programs, the university has its own academic press and a business institute.

    Barry University

    • Located in Miami Shores, Barry University is a private Catholic university in the Dominican tradition. The university enrolls over 8,500 students annually and offers over 100 different degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to these programs the university also houses a law school located in Orlando. Barry University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Undergraduate degree programs at Barry run the gamut from accounting to theology. At the graduate degree level master's and doctoral degrees are offered in a wide variety of fields as well. A Ph.D. is offered in the fields of curriculum and instruction, counseling, leadership in education, nursing and social work. Other types of doctoral degrees are offered in the fields of ministry and podiatric medicine.

    Nova Southeastern University

    • Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a private not-for-profit university. Nova Southeastern is well-recognized nationwide and publications like the Princeton Review for its online degree programs. The university is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and was voted as the best online university by Online Education Database in 2009. Nova Southeastern offers a wide variety of undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. The university has its own College of Medical Sciences, College of Dental Medicine, College of Optometry and College of Pharmacy.
