Pakistan, a Middle Eastern country of nearly 170 million people, has a long history of political instability, military rule and international conflict. Literacy rates are rising after years of conflict. As of 2010, an estimated 49.9% of Pakistan's population is literate, an increase from a 21% literacy rate in 1970. The Central Intelligence Agency estimates that 36% of woman are literate and 63% of men. Students spend an average of seven years in school. Pakistan has 130 public and private universities, according to its Higher Education Commission.

The 48-week course is divided between a national security term and a military strategy term. Graduates receive a Certificate of Graduation.     • Students at the Virtual University of Pakistan reaches students throughout the country with an emphasis on distance learning. The school offers a range of programs, including undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificate courses and "zero semester" classes that serve as prerequisites for continuing education. Students may apply during either the fall or spring semester, except for the Master of Computer Science program, which admits students only during the fall term.
