List of Pakistani Universities

Pakistan currently has a total of 132 public and private universities. Approximately 100 of these are actually affiliate or "technical training institutes, teacher training schools and other specialized institutions," according to a website sponsored by the Human Development Foundation. According to this same site, there is a substantial difference between public and private universities and colleges in Pakistan. Government sponsored institutions have declined in quality and enrollment while private schools have continued to thrive.
  1. University of Punjab

    • Founded in 1882, the University of Punjab is one of the oldest and most well-respected universities in Pakistan. Located in the city of Lahore, this university is accredited by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in the arts and humanities, business, engineering, language and cultural studies, medicine, health and the sciences and technology. The university is the oldest institution of higher learning in Pakistan, tracing its history back to 1882. It is a well-respected university that has produced three Nobel Laureates throughout its history. The university currently operates four campuses, with 13 faculties, 63 departments and currently enrolls over 30,000 students.

    University of Karachi

    • The University of Karachi is a public university located in the city of Karachi. It was founded in 1950 and is accredited by the Ministry of Education of Pakistan, and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university offers degrees in a wide number of fields within six major faculty divisions, including science, medicine, pharmacy, the arts, Islamic studies and management and administrative sciences. The university is the largest in Pakistan and is probably best known for its science department which consists of 23 departments and five major research centers. Its HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry is considered a World Academy of Science. The university also houses one of the nation's largest libraries and sponsors an evening class program for non-traditional students.

    Bahauddin Zakariya University

    • Founded in 1975, Bahauddin Zakariya University is a public university located in the town of Multan. The university is recognized by the Ministry of Education of Pakistan and is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. The university has a number of academic divisions including the Faculty of Arts-Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Agriculture, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Languages, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Business Administration, Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Engineering. The university is spread out over 960 acres consisting of 20 departments and 3 constituent colleges: University Gilani Law College, University College of Agriculture and University College of Engineering and Technology. Although the university is grounded in the arts and sciences, it has a focus in agriculture which is the primary industry in the region in which it is located. The college of agriculture works closely with the college of engineering to implement programs beneficial to the Pakistani agricultural economy.
