List of Universities in Ukraine

With a nearly 100 percent literacy rate in Ukraine, education is a highly valued commodity in the country with a long and rich history. Even the current heavyweight boxing champions of the world, Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, have doctorate degrees. Many of the universities tend to heavily favor the sciences, with a number of the best universities operating as technical schools.
  1. Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev

    • Considered one of the most prestigious universities in Ukraine, this school was founded in 1834 and named after Taras Shevchenko, a major figure in Ukrainian literature and painting. It maintains more faculties and departments than any other University in Ukraine and provides training of specialists in a greater number of fields than any other comparable Ukrainian educational institution. There are about 20,000 students enrolled, including 2,000 students at the Institute of International Relations.

    National Technical University of Ukraine

    • As one of the oldest and largest technical universities in Europe, this school is the epicenter of scientific education in Ukraine. It is the biggest university in the country with a student population exceeding 40,000. Students can also choose to study in Ukrainian, Russian, or English. Over 70 percent of this university's teachers have scientific degrees. They lead highly specialized facilities including the Department of Informatics, the Department of Power Engineering and the Automation Electro-Acoustic Faculty.

    Lviv State Ivan Franko University

    • This public university was founded in 1661 and is the oldest continuously operating university in Ukraine. It is one of the leading national Universities in training experts for education, research and industry in the country. The school enrolls 12,000 students in 111 specialty programs including philosophy, philology, applied mathematics and informatics.

    V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University

    • This university is considered one of the largest research centers in Ukraine. Its 21 schools include the Research Institutes of Chemistry, Biology, and Astronomy, the Institute of Physics and Engineering and the Institute of High Technologies. It is also one of the leading research organization of international several space programs and has its own astronomical observatory. The school has produced three Nobel prize winners.

    Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute

    • Founded in 1885, this school is one of the oldest technical universities in Ukraine. It began as a practical institute of technology with the two departments which have grown to 173 specialties of various technical fields including power-plant engineering, economics and computer science. It maintains a contemporary sporting complex that has been home to many Olympic and world champions.
