The Los Angeles Recording School was established in 1985. The college's goal is "to teach students how to explore the world of sound and transform their passion for music and audio into a dream career." Students get a hands-on approach to learning, trained by industry veterans in 19 professional recording studios and labs, using state-of-the-art hardware and software such as Digidesign Pro Tools HD systems, Neve mixing consoles and Solid State Logic. Classes include "Advanced Digital Audio," "Introduction to Recording Arts," "Music Production" and "Sound Foundations." The college's Career Development department coaches students on how to utilize their skills after graduating. Graduates have gone on to careers at Sony, Capitol Records and Warner Bros. among many other reputable music companies.

The California College of Music's music production program is "structured around the current needs of the 21st century recording industry" and features a 48-track Pro Tools recording environment. Students take courses such as "History of Recording and the Science of Sound," "Analog Recording & Signal Processing" and "Concepts of Mixing & Automation." The college believes that a strong musical background is essential to a music production degree and so offers classes in guitar, keyboards, harmony and theory, and rhythm training. Students also have access to a music technology lab, MIDI studio, several practice rooms, piano studio and many more rooms on the college's campus. California College of Music students study with music industry professionals who have worked with artists such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Billy Joel.

The School of Audio Engineering (SAE) Institute Los Angeles, one of 50 campuses worldwide, is located in the heart of Hollywood. The college offers an audio technology program for careers in music production in subjects covering recording techniques, mixing techniques, mastering, studio budgeting and session procedures. It offers a "hands on education" and provides each student with an Apple laptop that includes Pro Tools LE and Apple's Logic software. The audio technology program is a 900-hour program, 360 of those hours spent working in a recording studio.
