Music Production Colleges in Ohio

Music production can be a creatively rewarding and high-paying field. Ohio, which just happens to be home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, has several schools with music production programs where students can learn everything from audio basics to the latest recording technology.
  1. Oberlin Conservatory of Music

    • Founded in 1865, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, in northern Ohio, is the oldest \"continuously operating\" conservatory of its kind in the country. The school, which covers nearly every facet of music, includes TIMARA (Technology In Music And the Related Arts). Here students focus on the modern media used to record and perform music. The TIMARA program includes such courses as Studio Techniques and Studio Recording, along with a number of others in analog and digital circuitry. The school also provides students with seven fully equipped recording studios to use.

    Malone Univiersty

    • Malone University, in Canton, Ohio, was founded in 1892. Although the school offers a rounded liberal arts education, it has a particular focus on music and offers a B.A. in Music Production, among other musical fields. Within this program are courses such as Introduction to Recording and Sound Reinforcement, Music Technology, and Advanced Recording Techniques. There are also a number of courses focusing on the recording industry, such as Introduction to Music Industry Principles and Music Business Survey. All students are also required to participate in an off-campus internship in a professional recording environment.

    Cuyahoga Community College

    • Having opened its doors in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College is the oldest community college in Ohio. The school offers more than 140 career and technical programs and liberal arts curricula, which include a degree in Recording Arts & Technology. This program covers all aspects of music production, including Audio Electronics, Signal Processing and Studio Maintenance. It also allows students the option of taking more specific courses, such as Location Recording and Live Sound Reinforcement. As a step toward a Recording Arts & Technology degree, students are required to obtain on-the-job training to gain real-life music production experience.
