The audio production degree at Middle Tennessee State University emphasizes vital skills and knowledge for a music production profession, including coursework in Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), recording studio techniques, fundamentals of audio, computer-based scoring and music engineering. Students also learn about copyright law and common legal issues in the industry. The McNally Smith College of Music prepares students for a career in music production with its recording technology degree. Students can choose an engineering, production or live sound emphasis within the program. Using the latest recording and production technology, the hands-on coursework highlights technical concepts and skills used in the industry. Students also study advanced recording, editing and mixing while honing their music dexterity in keyboard, theoretical and auditory areas.

Known for its medical school, Johns Hopkins University is also home to the Peabody Institute, which offers a five-year Bachelor of Music degree in recording arts and sciences. Emphasizing the education needed for audio technicians, sound engineers and music producers, the double-degree program encompasses relative coursework in math, computer science and electrical engineering in conjunction with the engineering school to fulfill the science requirements. For the recording arts portion, students gain hands-on experience with different music genres, lab recording sessions and live musical events. Near the end of the program, students complete an internship with television, recording or radio companies local to the area.
