Music Colleges in Ohio

Music colleges in Ohio offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, music theory, and music composition. Performance focuses on the student mastering a particular instrument (or instruments). Music theory examines how music is put together by examining its elements, such as harmony, melody, form and structure. Composition allows the student musician to concentrate on the creation of original music.
  1. Oberlin College

    • The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College offers tracks for a bachelor of music, bachelor of arts, performance diplomas, a masters program in historical performance and a masters in music teaching. The undergraduate degree options include eight majors with the possibility of customization to suit the student's needs. The eight majors are music education, music theory, performance composition, music history, jazz studies, electronic and computer music and a double major of piano performance and vocal accompanying. The college has more than 1,500 instruments available for student use. There are 150 practice rooms on campus and five concert halls. Students learn in classrooms or teaching studios. More than 500 performances take place on campus each year.

    Ohio State University

    • Located in Columbus, the Ohio State University School of Music has bachelor of music degree tracks in performance, history, composition, jazz studies and theory. Other undergraduate degree options are a bachelor of music education and a more general bachelor of arts in music. Postgraduate programs include master of music, master of arts and doctor of musical arts. The school has more than 60 practice rooms, rehearsal halls and study studios, an auditorium with 720 seats, a 300-seat recital hall and an auditorium with 2,400 seats.

    Ohio University

    • Ohio University, in Athens, offers bachelor of music degrees with concentrations in music education, performance, music therapy and composition. Master of music degrees are offered in those concentrations plus conducting, music theory, music history, performance pedagogy and collaborative piano. A doctorate in interdisciplinary arts with a music emphasis is also offered. The school has two orchestras, a marching band, three concert bands, three choirs, four jazz ensembles and chamber ensembles. Over 150 performances and workshops take place on campus each year.

    Miami University

    • Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, offers bachelor of music degrees in performance or music education. Other options include a bachelor of arts in music and a master of arts in music, music education or performance. The school has a recital hall, digital piano lab, recording studio and three rehearsal halls.
