Music Management Colleges

For those that dream of working behind the scenes of the music industry, a degree in music management can be the ticket to a successful career. A degree in this field can lead to jobs in artist management, tour management and record label management among other things. There are a number of colleges in the country offering degrees in music management. Keep in mind that most programs require a background in music and some require an audition.
  1. Berklee College of Music

    • Berklee College of Music in Boston offers a degree in music business and management. Three tracks are available within the program: entrepreneurial activity, music products industry or corporate management. Each student must complete a final project that includes a portfolio of work completed. Courses in the program cover topics including ethics, business leadership, music products and basic musicianship and music theory. Upon graduation students will have the knowledge and skills to manage financial, artistic, ethical issues and legal issues in the music industry.

    Georgia State University

    • The School of Music at Georgia State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Management designed to prepare graduates for both profit and non-profit music sectors. Applicants to the program must have a strong musical background in performance and be fluent in reading music. An audition is required. Careers upon graduation may be found in concert management, music publishing, retail sales and record label management. An internship is required to graduate.

    Ferris State University

    • Ferris State University in Michigan offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry Management through its school of business. Students take classes in accounting, financial management, marketing, statistics advertising, public relations and retail principles. Two internships are required in the field and the school has many contacts in New York, Nashville and Los Angeles. The program is endorsed by the National Association of Music Merchants and students can attend the two trade shows held by the organization at no cost. Graduates are qualified for jobs at radio stations, record labels, music retailers and publishers.
