Music Colleges in Spain

Spain was a peninsula of small competing kingdoms until 1492 ,when the kingdoms were unified to become the Spanish kingdom. In 1496, Queen Isabella commissioned the "Cacionero de Palacio," the first collection of Spanish songs, as a way to help unify the kingdom. The competing kingdoms and regions of Spain maintained their unique cultures endowing Spain with diverse musical styles. Music is an important part of Spain's culture as witnessed by the importance the country places on music education at the post-secondary level.

    • The Musikene Higher School of Music of the Basque Country offers programs that allow students to specialize in specific instruments, music composition or education. Admission is competitive and depends on the entrance exam results. The structure of the entrance exam is determined by the field of specialization the student is choosing to pursue. All applicants are required to perform as part of the entrance exam.

    Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía

    • The Queen Sofia School of Music opened in 1991 with the goal of providing high caliber training to young musicians. Classes are small with five to 10 students for every department. Admission is competitive and based on application materials and an audition. To audition, you must submit the application that is available on the school's website, along with supporting documentation by the deadline. Once the application review is complete and auditions are completed, the staff completes the student selection process.

    Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid

    • The Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid currently makes its home in an 18th century building situated in front of the Queen Sofia National Center of Art. The school dates back to 1830, when Queen Maria Cristina decreed that Spain would have a music teaching institution. Admission into the programs is competitive and based on exam results. All students are required to interpret a piece of music as part of the exam but the rest of the exam is structured according to the major the student wishes to pursue.

    Conservatori Liceu

    • The Conservatori del Liceu began in 1837 when a group of Barcelona citizens decided to start an organization designed to promote the culture of the city and offer music education. The Conservatori del Liceu became an independent institution in 1983 when the Departament d'Enseyament de la Generalitat separated the Conservatori Superior de Barcelona into two separate entities. Entrance into the school is competitive, and admission depends on how a student performs on an entrance exam and interview with the admission board.
