The College of Music at Michigan State University offers undergraduate, master's and doctorate level degrees in various fields of music. The College of Music offers undergraduates the opportunity to study music composition, jazz studies, music education and music performance, which can be taken with a focus on percussion, piano, strings, vocal and wind instruments. The master's level courses include musicology, conducting, music theory and piano pedagogy. The College of Music also offers a diploma course in performance, which is geared toward students who wish to improve their performance skills but don't want to enroll in a full degree program.
Wayne State University's Department of Music offers two degree programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Music. The Bachelor of Arts in Music program is for students interested in improving their musical ability and knowledge whilst gaining a general grounding in the arts. After finishing study, students can move on to graduate courses in music theory, musicology and ethnomusicology. The Bachelor of Music program is better suited to more serious students of music and aims to provide professional training in music. This course allows students to focus on one of seven areas of specialization, including music business, music technology, performance or theory and composition.
Marygrove College's Institute of Music and Dance offers short courses in music for both adults and children. The courses offered include beginner's piano, gospel piano, vocal dynamics and class guitar. These courses are suitable for anybody, and don't have competency requirements in the way degree programs do. The Institute of Music and Dance is also dedicated to community outreach programs and has recently received a commendation from the Detroit City Council.
The University of Michigan's School of Music Theatre and Dance is located in Ann Arbor, about 40 miles from Detroit, and offers courses in many musical disciplines. Students can study music composition, conducting, music education, music theory, musicology and jazz and improvisation. Students can also take performance courses in piano, vocals, strings, organ, winds and percussion. The musicology courses offered by the college include degree, specialist, certificate and doctorate level programs.
