Located in 21 states, the Empire Beauty School offers five programs of study including cosmetology, make-up artistry, nail technology and esthetics. The school has four locations in the New York area -- Brooklyn, Peekskill, New York and Astoria. In 1935, the first school opened in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) accredits the schools full- and part-time class options. Requirements for entry into the school include minimum age of 17, high school diploma or GED, and an interview with the director. To graduate, you must complete 1,000 hours of instruction, have a grade point average of 70 percent and pass the final exams.
The Aveda Institute offers a cosmetology and an esthetics program. The school requires students to complete 1,000 hours of hands-on learning to prepare them for the New York Cosmetology Licensing Exam. The program for cosmetology lasts 30 weeks for the daytime program and 51 weeks for the evening program. Located in the SoHo district of New York City, the Aveda Institute has a 12,000-square-foot facility.
Opened in 1941, the Long Island Beauty School has locations in New York City, Long Island and Brooklyn. The National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences accredits the school, which offers several financial aid options. In addition, it has a job placement department that works with current and past students. The school offers courses in hairdressing, cosmetology and nail and waxing technology. The cosmetology program consists of 1,000 hours of instruction.
