Public Colleges in New York City

New York City has the largest student population of any city in the United States. A large number of those students attend public colleges and universities, taking advantage of the benefits of an education in a large urban setting. There are several public colleges located throughout New York City in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, as well as the College of Staten Island.
  1. Manhattan

    • The City University of New York (CUNY) has 10 colleges located in the Borough of Manhattan. The schools include the City College of New York (CCNY). Founded in 1847, CCNY is the alma mater of eight Nobel Prize winners. Baruch College and Hunter College are two of the most distinguished public colleges in the U.S. Another school is the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. The only public graduate school of journalism in the northeast, the school offers a 16-month Masters Program. Other schools in Manhattan include the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the CUNY Graduate Center, School of Public Health and School of Professional Studies as well as the Borough of Manhattan Community College and the Macaulay Honors College. The State University of New York (SUNY) operates an Information Center and College of Optometry in Manhattan. Founded in 1971, the school operates the University Eye Center, an outpatient clinic that provides students with clinical experience.

    Queens

    • CUNY has five schools in Queens, including the CUNY School of Law in Flushing. Open since 1983, it is a public interest law school and is ranked among the top 10 law schools in the country in clinical training. It operates with a motto of "Law in the Service of Human Needs." Other schools in Queens include LaGuardia Community College, Queens College, Queensborough Community College and York College. York is the site of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lab that offers students the opportunity for internships and jobs with the FDA.

    Brooklyn

    • Four CUNY campuses call Brooklyn home, including Brooklyn College. Located on Bedford Avenue, this school in 2009 enrolled over 17,000 students. Another Brooklyn public college is the New York City College of Technology or City Tech. Located at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, City Tech offers its over 15,000 students technical instruction and a general liberal arts education. The other schools in Brooklyn are Kingsborough Community College and Medgar Evers College. Founded in 1970, Medgar Evers honors the slain civil rights worker and meets the educational needs of the central Brooklyn community.

    Bronx

    • The Bronx is home to three CUNY campuses: Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College and Lehman College. Lehman offers a 37-acre, tree-lined campus adjacent to the Jerome Park Reservoir. Named for Herbert H. Lehman, a New York governor and senator, the school was originally founded in 1931 as the Bronx campus of Hunter College and achieved independent status in 1968. It currently enrolls over 12,000 students.
