List of New York Colleges

In the U.S., the term "college" generally indicates a four-year institution of higher learning where a bachelor's degree is earned. It can also refer to a two-year community or junior college where an associate's degree is earned. Some colleges stand alone, while many colleges gathered under one institution comprise a university. New York has at least 180 colleges scattered throughout the state.

    • Bard College, located on Annandale-on-Hudson, is about a two-hour drive north from New York City. Bard is a small, private liberal arts school of about 2,000 students in a rural setting. "U.S. News and World Report" ranks Bard admissions as "most selective."     City University of New York (CUNY)

    • With 23 colleges and institutions throughout New York City, CUNY serves almost half a million students each year. CUNY includes seven senior, or four-year, colleges as well as specialized colleges such as the Macaulay Honors College or the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. CUNY is one of the leading urban public schools in the country and prides itself on its "commitment to providing first rate academic opportunities for students of all backgrounds."

    State University of New York (SUNY)

    • Serving almost half a million students over 63 locations throughout New York State, SUNY campus settings range from large cities to small towns to rural mountains and even to beach settings. SUNY offers numerous four-year programs in its many colleges, some with specializations such as the Alfred State Technology College or the Cornell NYS College of Human Ecology.     • Located in the heart of New York City's famed Greenwich Village, NYU houses numerous colleges including the Leonard Stern School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and the Tisch School of the Arts with its top-ranking film school.     Ithaca College

    • Located in the college town of Ithaca next to Cayuga Lake, Ithaca College is about four hours northwest of New York City. Ithaca is a private school of about 6,500 students and includes five schools: business, communications, health, music and arts and science. It is rated "more selective" by "U.S. News and World Reports," and its communications program is highly regarded.

    Cornell University

    • Cornell University, located in Ithaca, is an Ivy League school and is regarded as among the most competitive in the nation. Undergraduate population is around 14,000 throughout 14 different colleges and schools, with the largest being the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Cornell has strong Greek life, with many sororities and fraternities, and is known for its men's lacrosse and hockey programs.
