New York Equestrian Colleges

Finding a college that specializes in the equine arts requires scrutinizing the programs available and finding the one that best meets your educational and future professional goals. There are four colleges in the state of New York that have courses and degrees that focus on equestrians, both in application and in business.
  1. Houghton College

    • Located in Houghton, New York, Houghton College is a Christian institution with both a minor and major dedicated to equestrian studies. The equestrian studies minor requires 13 hours of coursework, selected from two of three preset courses, in addition to riding instructor certification and six hours of electives within the program. The major, designated "Recreation Major with Equestrian Concentration," is designed to prepare students for professional careers such as a riding instructor, a stable manager or as a trainer.

    Cazenovia College

    • Cazenovia College's program is designed for students interested in the equine industry either on the back end, such as stable management, or those interested in hands-on horse care and breeding. The college offers interactions with over 70 horses on their 243-acre farm. Cazenovia's equine program is accredited by the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education.

    Morrisville State College

    • Morrisville's equine science degree is focused towards students interested in management within specific subsets of the equine industry. This includes, but is not limited to, nutrition, genetics, breeding and racing. Students interested in the Morrisville equine science program must have an associate degree before entering the program.

    Skidmore College

    • While not a degree geared toward equestrians, the Skidmore College riding program does offer 16 courses dedicated to horses and competitive riding, perfect for students more interested in hands-on experience with horses. The program has four dedicated faculty members, and has 30 horses available for use by students. It requires a minimum two hours of riding per week, and caters both to novice and experienced riders.
