Many colleges and universities in New York offer a master of arts in dramatic studies. Students can study theater history, directing and many other disciplines. One example is The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University, which offers master's degrees in acting, directing and writing plays. All students participate in seminars entitled "Inside the Actors Studio" that air on the Bravo television network.
Hunter College also offers a master's degree in theater or playwriting. Here students can explore diverse drama studies, such as African-American, Asian and avant-garde theater. Playwriting degree candidates benefit from playwright Tina Howe, who shared her expertise with potential graduates, at the time of publication.
The American Academy of Dramatic Arts offers a four-week intensive summer acting program beginning June 27 each year. The instructors are proven experts in acting, directing, dancing and vocal. Students can also choose from a variety of electives.
At Stagedoor Manor, young drama enthusiasts, ages 10 to 18, can attend beginners or advanced summer classes. Students can choose between musical or drama courses, benefiting from the expertise of seasoned directors, choreographers and vocal coaches. Stagedoor offers three three-week summer sessions beginning June 20 each year.
Students can earn a bachelor of fine arts in acting at Marymount Manhattan College. This intensive 60-credit program combines theater with a liberal arts education. The four-year program focuses on acting techniques ranging from contemporary to period styles.
The City College of New York also has a bachelor's degree program in theater. Courses range from acting and directing to studies in specific theater types, such as women's theater. Scholars can choose dramatic arts as a minor or a dual major.
Hunter College offers an undergraduate curriculum based on modern dance that concentrates on dance careers such as choreography. The associated community outreach program offers students repertory classes with choreographers and opportunities to perform internationally. Internships and New York State teaching certification are also available as part of the program.
At Hollins University, the dance program allows aspiring dancers to practice techniques with visiting artists. Program undergraduates also get an opportunity to perform at a professional level as part of the Hollins Repertory Dance Company.
