New York's Architecture Colleges

The New York State Department of Labor predicts that the demand for architects in the state will increase by more than 13 percent from 2006 through 2016. To receive state licensure in the field, aspiring architects must first graduate from a post-secondary degree program. A small number of colleges in the state offer such courses of study and carry the accreditation of the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
  1. Columbia University

    • Located in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, Columbia University is a private, nonsectarian institution with more than 24,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The college ranked fourth in the nation among all universities in the United States in the "Best College 2011" ratings published by "U.S. News and World Report." The university offers a Master of Architecture degree program. A Bachelor's degree in any field is necessary for graduation, and students with no previous architecture experience must take a prerequisite class in the field and submit a portfolio of design work. Among the topics covered in the curriculum for the degree are architectural history and theory, materials, structure and fabrication techniques. All students complete six studio classes prior to graduation. Classes include field trips to New York City-area buildings to observe topics covered in class put to real-life use. The program lasts for approximately three years.
