With an enrollment of nearly 439,000, the State University of New York system is the world's largest comprehensive system of community colleges, colleges and universities. SUNY operates four doctoral granting institutions in Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook as well as the following institutions which also grant doctoral-level degrees: SUNY Downstate Medical Center, SUNY Upstate Medical Center, SUNY State College of Optometry, New York State College of Ceramics, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, New York State College of Human Ecology, New York State College of Veterinary Medicine and the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
SUNY also operates 13 University Colleges that offer primarily baccalaureate and master's degrees. These schools include Empire State College, Buffalo State College and SUNY campuses in Brockport, Cortland, Fredonia, Geneseo, New Paltz, Old Westbury, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Purchase. In addition, SUNY runs nine technical colleges (Alfred State, Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY Canton, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Delhi, SUNY Farmingdale, SUNY Morrisville, SUNY Institute of Technology and SUNY Maritime College) and 27 community colleges spread throughout the state.
The City University of New York system consists of the following senior colleges (schools that grant bachelor's, master's and/or doctoral degrees): Baruch College, Brooklyn College, The City College of New York, College of Staten Island, CUNY Graduate Center, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, CUNY School of Law, CUNY School of Professional Studies, CUNY School of Public Health, Hunter College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Lehman College, Medgar Evers College, New York City College of Technology, Queens College and York College. The CUNY system also consists of six community colleges (Borough of Manhattan, Bronx, Hostos, Kingsborough, LaGuardia and Queensborough) as well as an honors college and online learning opportunities.
New York State also has a wealth of private institutions and one military service academy located outside the New York City region. These schools include Alfred University, Bard College, Canisius College, Clarkson University, Colgate University, Concordia College, Cornell University, Dominican College, Hamilton College, Hartwick College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Houghton College, Iona College, Ithaca College, Keuka College, Le Moyne College, Marist College, Medaille College, Mercy College, Nazareth College, Niagara University, Pace University-Westchester, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Sarah Lawrence College, Skidmore College, Siena College, St. Bonaventure University, St. John Fisher College, St. Lawrence University, St. Thomas Aquinas College, Syracuse University, Union College, United States Military Academy, University of Rochester, Utica College and Vassar College.
Students can also choose from several private colleges within the city of New York. These institutions are Barnard College, Berkeley College, College of Mount Saint Vincent, Columbia University, Fordham University, Long Island University-Brooklyn, Manhattan College, Manhattan School of Music, New York University, Pace University, Pratt Institute, Rockefeller University, St. John's University, The King's College (New York), The New School, The Juilliard School and Yeshiva University.
In addition to private schools upstate and in New York City, New York also has several private institutions located on Long Island. These schools include Adelphi University, Dowling College, Hofstra University, Long Island University-C.W. Post Campus, Molloy College, New York Institute of Technology, Saint Joseph's College (Suffolk Campus), Touro Law Center, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Watson School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Webb Institute of Naval Architecture.
