Athletic Training at New York Colleges

Athletic trainers are experts who specialize in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries. They work in colleges, universities and high schools or provide their services to professional sports teams. Athletic training programs at New York colleges are provided at the bachelor's and graduate levels. Students can combine their degrees with physical education or health and human services.

    • Based in Buffalo, New York, Canisius College is a private university that offers degree programs in arts and sciences, business, education and human services. The athletic training degree is designed to prepare graduates for careers in public education, colleges, sports medicine and professional sports. The program admits only 16 students per year and provides classroom and practical training. The athletic training program is approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Graduates are prepared to take the board certificate examination. You have the option of combining your major with health and human performance or pursuing a dual master's degree in physical education. Course highlights include kinesiology, therapeutic exercise, sports psychology and practicum in athletic training.

    Marist College

    • Marist College provides a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training; the program is accredited by the CAATE. In addition to receiving classroom instruction, students work one-on-one with certified athletic trainers to satisfy the clinical portion of their training. You are assessed on your competency and proficiency as outlined by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Education Council. The clinical portion of the coursework takes place at local high schools, colleges, hospitals and clinics. Prior to being admitted into the program, you are required to take preprofessional introductory courses in athletic training, biology and chemistry. In addition, students must participate in 100 observation hours under the supervision of allied health care professionals.

    Daemen College

    • The Master of Science course in physical training at Daemen College is an entry-level program that runs for five years. In addition to receiving a master's degree in physical training, graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in health care studies. Graduates are eligible to take the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Board of Certification exam. You satisfy the clinical portion of your training by working with student-athletes at the college and at other local sites. Course offerings for the combined degree training include neuroscience, pharmacology, sports psychology and exercise physiology.
