The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, also known as IIT Bombay, ranks top amongst Indian universities in the QS rankings and also features in the Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings for 2009 at 163rd in the world. Founded in 1958, IIT Bombay organizes its teaching and research into 14 academic departments. Although its focus is on technical subjects such as engineering, it also aims to give students a solid grounding in other subjects, including English, sociology, economics and management. In the 2008-2009 academic year, IIT Bombay employed 495 faculty members and enrolled 652 undergraduates and 1,102 postgraduates.

The QS Asian rankings place the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, also known as IITK, second in India and 37th in Asia overall. As its name suggests, IITK’s main focus is on engineering and technology, although students can also choose to study humanities and social sciences within their program. The university offers both a four-year BTech degree and a five-year integrated MSc to undergraduates. Teaching combines large classroom lectures with laboratory sessions in smaller groups and tutorial discussions.

The Times Higher Education Supplement study found that the university ranked particularly high under the Employer Review criteria, where it recorded a score 81 out a possible 100.
