Indian statesman Jawaharlal Nehru established the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1956 "to serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspects of health care." The institute strives to serve as the meeting point of excellence in all fields of health services in India. As of June 2010, the school teaches 42 medicine-related disciplines and hosts a nursing college. AIIMS also stands at the forefront when it comes to research; for instance, studies conducted at the center helped halt the frequent outbreaks of diarrhea in the country. Other research programs include studies on malaria, leprosy vaccines and HIV diagnostic testing. AIIMS enforces its standard of quality education by picking only 50 students per year to study certain courses at the institution.

Jawarhalal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research--or JIPMER--started out in 1823 as the French school Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery. The Indian government took over the school after the country gained independence in 1956 and renamed it in 1964. The school offers three undergraduate programs focusing on medicine, medical technology and medical record science and has a 300-strong faculty and 565 doctors serving as residents in its hospital. JIPMER's hospital provides both allopathic treatment and has advanced diagnostic and therapeutic facilities that serve the needs of the underprivileged. The institute also hosts the JIPMER Scientific Society, which pools the research of its members and thus serves as a meeting point of knowledge from the school's different departments.
