The Medical Council of India (MCI) oversees and governs all medical education in India. Colleges and universities grant MBBS, MS, MD, BDS and MDS degrees according to the standards set by the MCI. All medical degrees are recognized internationally. Entrance exams are required for admission: the national All India Entrance Test and the Common Entrance Test at the state level.

    Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Reasearch

    • JIPMER was founded by the French government in 1823, and originally called Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery. It was taken over by the Indian government in 1956. Its tertiary care referral hospital is administered directly by the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India. JIPMER has a staff of approximately 3,000, with a teaching staff of 361 resident doctors. It offers both undergraduate and post-graduate medical and paramedical programs.

    Kasturba Medical College (KMC)

    • KMC was founded in 1953 and established its pre-clinical program in 1969. It is a constituent college to Manipal University. It claims to be the only U.S.-style medical school and ranked first in the top private medical schools in India.
