M.B.B.S.--or bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery--programs are courses of study at Indian medical colleges, which educate doctors and health professionals at the highest level. The top schools can be very difficult to get into, and each year thousands of qualified students are turned down. In order to be eligible for one of these programs, students must have a Class XII education or its equivalent in chemistry, biology or physics.

    • The Maulana Azad Medical College is composed of the main college campus and three affiliate teaching hospitals in New Delhi, India. These hospitals serve a rural population of more than 30,000 people. The school was founded in 1959 and offers undergraduate, post-graduate and certificate programs. The school is known for attracting a premier set of faculty members. Each year, Maulana Azad admits 180 students into its M.B.B.S course. Applications require a non-refundable fee regardless of acceptance, and once a student's application has been selected, they must undergo an oral interview by faculty from the department to which they are applying.

    Armed Forces Medical College

    • The Armed Forces Medical College was founded in 1948 in the aftermath World War II. Because it is run by the Indian Armed Forces, this school is a leader in medical education and research for the country. The campus is located in Pune, India, which has a long military tradition. It features a library with more than 18,000 publications, 14,000 print journals and subscriptions to 270 international scholarly magazines. The school awards students both undergraduate and graduate level degrees. It also educates paramedical staff and nurses. Getting into this school requires passing an entrance exam and an oral interview. One hundred and thirty students are accepted per year, of which 25 are women.
