India gained independence in 1947, but many of its best medical schools are much older than the country. India has a long history and, today, its best medical institutions are a mix of those founded during British rule and newer colleges founded after independence. Today, these schools train thousands of new doctors every year that serve the billion-plus residents of India.
  1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi

    • The All India Institute of Medical Sciences was created in 1956 as an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament. This act had been in the works since 1946 and was the longtime dream of Jawaharlal Nehru. Today, AIMS offers courses to both undergraduates and graduates and awards its own degrees. It conducts research and teaching in 42 disciplines, has published more than 600 research papers by its faculty and researchers in a single year, and has 25 clinical departments. AIMS is located in New Delhi, in northern India.

    Armed Forces Medical College, Pune

    • The Armed Forces Medical College was founded in 1948 when a number of army training centers joined together to form a single medical college. In 1962, a graduate wing was added to the college. Today, it is managed by the Indian Armed Forces, trains undergraduates as well as graduates and nurses, and provides a pool of specialists to the Armed Forces. The Armed Forces Medical College is located in Pune, on the west coast of India.

    • The Christian Medical College is more than 100 years old. It was established on both medical and religious principles and, to this day, teaches its students to take inspiration from God while excelling in clinical and research medicine.     • The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (known as JIPMER) was established in 1823 by the French government. The Indian government took over in 1956 and upgraded and renamed the institute. It has nearly 3,000 staff members, 300 teachers and 565 resident doctors.     Kasturba Medical College Chennai

    • Dr. TMA Pai founded Kasturba Medical College in 1953 as the first nonprofit private medical college. Despite its relatively young age, it now boasts of over 20,000 currently enrolled students and over 72,000 alumni. Kasturba also includes a dental college and a pharmacy college.     • Grant Medical College was founded in 1838 by Sir Robert Grant, the Governor of Bombay at the time. He was shocked by the lack of medical care available to local residents.     • The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India established St. John's Medical College in 1963. It has a hospital with 1,200 beds and, in addition to its medical and surgical departments, has a college of nursing and a research institute.
