Jawaharlal Nehru established the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi to become an institution specializing in a high standard of medical education in the country and to bring together educational facilities in one place to train students and personnel in all branches of medical science and health care. The institute has 25 clinical departments---including four specialty centers for most types of disease conditions---and a 1,766-bed hospital. Programs the institution offers as undergraduate degrees include those in the areas of surgery, human biology, nursing, audiometry, ophthalmic techniques and radiography. Postgraduate studies include programs in medicine, science, dental surgery and biotechnology, as well as specialty courses in surgical disciplines such as cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, pediatric surgery and endocrinology. The institute also offers a doctorate degree and has hostels and other housing accommodations for students on the campus.

Established in 1948, the Armed Forces Medical College began as a postgraduate training and research center, but today offers various degrees and programs for undergraduate students. These include an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree and nursing training, as well as postgraduate degrees in anatomy, general surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, hospital administration, biochemistry, blood transfusion and hematology, pharmacology, pathology, psychiatry, pediatrics and more. The college also offers doctorate degrees in physiology, microbiology, and preventive and social medicine. Students who wish to take the MBBS course must live in the college's residential units, which are located in hostels and provide meals.
