Established in 1966, the centre is affiliated with the Oberoi Group, which operates 28 hotels and three cruisers in five countries. The centre's management training programs are considered among the best in Asia, and Mint ranks this as India's top hospitality program. Eligibility is limited to students between the ages of 19 and 25 who have completed or are completing a university or college degree in any subject. The program begins each year in July, but the student selection process begins in September of the previous year. The program is based in Maidens Hotel in New Delhi and offers two-year programs in guest services management, housekeeping management, and kitchen management.

Manipal University established its college for Hotel Management Studies in 1986. One year later, the college became affiliated with the Welcomgroup, the hotel chain with links to U.S.-based Starwood Company. The college has secured a majority of the top university rankings in recent years, and graduates have found positions in hotel chains, airlines, travel agencies and financial firms. Just 100 students begin the four-year program each year, and they're taught by 30 faculty members. Students get on-the-job training in an operational 70-room Welcomgroup Hotel that has three kitchen labs as well as bakery, confectionery, butchery and garde-manger rooms. It also includes housekeeping and front-office labs, an audio-visual room, a vast library, a computer lab, and hostels with recreational and dining facilities.
