The Best Universities for Architecture in the UK

With its rich history and aesthetically striking churches, museums, industrial buildings and historical structures, it comes as no surprise that a number of prominent universities in the United Kingdom offer architecture programs. These are prestigious courses of study that emphasize both the practical, engineering side of architecture and the artistic sensibilities necessary to the construction of new buildings.
  1. University of Edinburgh

    • The University of Edinburgh offers a total of eight degrees in architecture: seven master's degrees and one bachelor's degree. The seven master's degrees offered are in architecture, architectural history, architectural history coupled with archaeology, history of art and architectural history, social and architectural history, architecture in creative and cultural environments and structural engineering with architecture. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to earn a degree in structural engineering with architecture as well. All degrees have accreditation from the Architects Registration Board, and the programs are offered jointly with Edinburgh College of Art, giving students access to a wider range of facilities.

    Cambridge University

    • The architecture program at Cambridge University is a three-year course of study during which students engage in studio work, the study of architectural history and research of specific architectural styles through case studies. Also included is a first-year trip to Rome to visit that city's best-known buildings. Cambridge emphasized the academic aspects of architecture more than other programs, but also offers hands-on experience. It is considered one of the more difficult and time-intensive studies of any at Cambridge.

    University of Manchester

    • The Manchester School of Architecture at the University of Manchester is one of the largest architecture schools in the United Kingdom. The architecture program is a five-year, full-time course of study divided between two degrees, a three-year bachelor of arts degree followed by a two-year bachelor of architecture program. After graduating from the first program, students typically garner a year of professional experience in an architectural office as directed by the school. They then move on to the second degree. Organizations associated with the program are the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architects' Registration Board, making this an accredited program.
