Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, offers an undergraduate fire science degree program that is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. The program was the first four-year undergraduate degree in fire science created in the United States. It requires that students enroll in several specialized courses of study, including fire science principals, arson investigation, hazardous materials, fire protection construction, public safety, fire protection hydraulics, code enforcement inspection and fire protection systems equipment. The program is designed to be completed in four years for those students who study full-time; part-time students generally can complete the fire science degree in five to six years. Students must complete a senior seminar in which they demonstrate mastery of all methodologies and protection principles acquired in their academic studies.

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC), located in Adelphi, Maryland, is one of several public universities that make up the University System of Maryland. UMUC's undergraduate fire science program consists of 120 credit hours (which typically take four years, or eight semesters, to complete). Among the course requirements, students must take 30 credit hours in core major courses, including courses in fire personnel management, advanced fire administration, fire prevention organization and management, emergency services, political and legal foundations, fire investigation and fire dynamics. Students are required to maintain at least a C average in order to remain in good standing, and must complete a final capstone paper or project that tackles a fire science problem using an original approach.

Fayetteville State University, with a main campus located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is one of 16 public institutions that make up the University of North Carolina System of universities. The school, which is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, offers a bachelor's program in fire science with specializations in fire management and fire investigations. Both programs require that students complete courses in human-related fire behavior, fire service administration, political and legal foundations of fire service, applied fire research and personnel management. Students must maintain a C average or better to graduate, and are required to complete a practicum at a participating fire station or emergency management service.
