List of the Top Division I Universities in California

With the establishment of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), schools and programs were divided into divisions based on athletics, revenue and magnitude of the sports program. Out of these divisions, Division 1 is the mightiest. A state the size of California has a plethora of Division 1 schools that excel at both higher learning and athletics.
  1. Stanford

    • Founded in 1885, the Leland Stanford Junior University--usually called Stanford--is one the best universities in the United States and home of the Stanford Cardinal athletics department. Stanford is a private research university with an average enrollment of just over 6,000 students, according to its website. The university also boasts a faculty that collectively has 16 Nobels and four Pulitzers, as noted by U.S. News.

      According to the NCAA website, as of April 2010, Stanford has won 97 NCAA national championships, as well as 427 individual NCAA titles - the most in the nation. Some of the university's best athletic teams--according to each team's number of winning championships--include men's and women's tennis, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's water polo.

    University of Southern California

    • The University of Southern California (USC) is home to the USC Trojans, a football team known for winning the Heisman Trophy seven times, as of April 2010. Ranked #9 on the Princeton Review's Dream Colleges list, USC is also "among the top 10 private universities in federal supported research activity," according to the university website.

      According to NCAA statistics, USC has won 89 national championships and a total of 358 individual titles, as of April 2010. The men's teams, known as the Trojans, and the women's teams, known as the Women of Troy, are both powerhouses in the NCAA. The men's leading sports programs consist of their football, baseball, tennis and track and field teams. The women's best athletic teams are tennis and volleyball.

    University of California, Los Angeles

    • The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is home to the UCLA Bruins, part of the Pac-10 NCAA Division 1 Conference. UCLA ranks as the 24th best school in the nation with a student body of close to 40,000 students. UCLA offers "31 academic programs [that] are ranked among the top 20 in their fields," according to U.S. News.

      The NCAA website affirms that as of April 2010, UCLA has won 104 NCAA national championships--more than any other school--with 71 men's and 33 women's. The school also has a total of 258 individual NCAA titles. According to each team's number of winning championships, some of UCLA's best teams include men's basketball, volleyball and tennis, and women's softball and water polo.
