A List of U.C. Universities in California

The University of California system includes 10 campuses and a wide range of off-campus educational opportunities in smaller communities for students across the Golden State. Three of the universities within the system are discussed below. The schools are among the state's largest schools and each provides a good example of what is available in California's public college system.
  1. UC Berkeley

    • The University of California, Berkeley, a prestigious university located in Northern California, offers a full range of programs in 14 colleges and schools, including the Haas School of Business, the College of Letters and Science, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy and the School of Social Welfare. The faculty at Berkeley in 2010 includes four Pulitzer Prize winners and seven Nobel Laureates. Berkeley ranks first in the nation for universities with the most programs considered in the top 10 of the field, according to the UC Berkeley website. The student-teacher ratio at Berkeley is 15-to-1. UC Berkeley is located on a 1,232-acre campus and was home to 35,000 students in 2009.

    UC Davis

    • The University of California Davis is located in the state's Central Valley near the state capital of Sacramento. UC Davis draws students from all over the state and beyond. In fact, one in every 276 Californians is an alumni of UC Davis, according to the university's website. The Davis campus was home to the first Native American Studies department in the nation. UC Davis is the only university in the system with schools of law, education, medicine, management, nursing and veterinary medicine. UC Davis is considered a leader in biological sciences and the campus has one of the top 50 hospitals in America, according to the university website.

    UCLA

    • Located in the heart of one of America's largest cities, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is among the most recognizable names in education. UCLA has 26,000 students, who can choose from a wide range of educational opportunities ranging from medicine to the arts and from education to engineering. The UCLA Library has eight million books along with thousands of serial subscriptions and extensive online resources. In 2010 the UCLA faculty included five Nobel Prize winners, three Pulitzer Prize winners and one winner of the Fields Medal in Mathematics.
