Library Science Degree Schools

Library science programs focus on the practices, technology, professionalism and management involved in library operations. Any prospective library science program you consider should be accredited through the American Library Association. A library science program may rise to the master's degree level, and possible career options include librarian, children's librarian, researcher and information specialist. Below is a representative sampling of institutions located around the nation.
  1. University of North Texas

    • Located in Denton, the University of North Texas offers a master's degree program in library and information science. The program requires students to complete 36 credits and a 120-hour internship. Students have the opportunity to specialize in digital image management, information organization, school librarianship, youth librarianship and distributed learning librarianship. Research is conducted through the Texas Center for Digital Knowledge, and students must complete a capstone project during their final semester. As of 2010, in-state tuition runs over $7,000, while out-of-state students can expect to pay almost $15,000 per year.

    East Carolina University

    • The Master of Library Science at East Carolina University prepares students to work in both public and school libraries. Students are required to complete 39 credits, and concentrations are available in school media library, public library and academic library. Core courses for all concentrations include foundations of library and information sciences, library administration and management, organization of information in libraries, human computer interface design, and the art of storytelling. In addition to coursework, students also must participate in seminars and an internship. The university is located in Greenville, North Carolina, and as of 2011, tuition for in-state students is about $5,000, and out-of-state students pay about $17,000.

    San Jose State University

    • San Jose State University is located in San Jose, California, and offers a master's degree in library and information science entirely online. Students must have a computer with high speed Internet and up-to-date operating system. Communication between teachers and students takes place through e-mail, discussion boards and chat rooms. The curriculum includes courses in information organization and management, issues in public libraries, online searching, data management, school media library centers, and archives and manuscripts. Students are also required to complete a thesis and internship. Tuition at the school is about $5,400 for in-state students and $16,500 for out-of-state students.

    St. Catherine University

    • Students enrolled at St. Catherine University have the option of pursuing a master's degree in library and information sciences. The program focuses on the principles and ethics involved in library and information sciences, and how best to serve patrons who use library facilities for information and research purposes. The curriculum teaches students about library education, research, service and environment. Courses are available during the evenings and weekends in order to accommodate working adults. The university is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, and tuition for all students is about $30,000 per year.
