Actuaries are employed in the insurance industry and help a company assess the risk when major events occur. Actuarial science uses statistical and mathematical methods and is essential in the finance industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of April 2010 the median annual wage for actuaries is $84,810 and competition for jobs is fierce.
