The Best Colleges in Indiana for Architecture

Indiana is called the "brain bank of the Midwest" for bringing in the 4th largest number of out-of-state students in the nation, according to uscollegesearch.org. Students who want to attend schools of architecture can choose from a long list including The University of Notre Dame, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne.
  1. The University of Notre Dame

    • Offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs, The University of Notre Dame offers majors in architecture with concentrations in furniture design, building arts, architectural practice and enterprise, and preservation and reservation. This private Catholic university was founded in 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin and occupies 1,250 acres with two lakes and 138 buildings. Admission to the university is "highly competitive," according to the school's website, as 71 percent of incoming freshmen were in the top 5 percent of their high school graduating classes. Notre Dame offers a School of Architecture where undergraduates spend a year in Rome and graduates spend a semester. During this trip, students view parts of Italy including Tuscany, Sicily and Campagna, among other cities. Exploring, sketching and presentation by faculty members accompany these trips.

    Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis

    • Under the Department of Design and Communication at IUPUI, undergraduates are offered an Associate of Science degree in architectural technology. "The degree program is designed to provide students with the skills to work in the areas of architectural drafting and detailing, simple structural design, planning, estimating inspection, and sales," according to the school's website. Graduates often find themselves landing jobs with construction firms, building material suppliers, architectural firms and various governmental agencies. The school's website warns that the 2-year program is not intended to "prepare students for registration as licensed or professional architects as additional school is required." IUPUI was formed between Indiana University and Purdue University in 1969 as "an effort to bring together all of the Indiana University and Purdue University schools existing in Indianapolis."
