Colleges for Naval Architecture

Naval architects design, build and fix marine vessels like ships, boats and submarines. This career is commonly part of the federal government, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and most jobs can be found working for the Navy or Marines in Virginia and Maryland. Naval architects must be good at math, science and design, and be able to combine all of those elements to build powerful, safe vessels. Naval architecture programs are found at a limited number of universities.
  1. Dalhousie University

    • Dalhousie University, a small school in Nova Scotia, offers a specialization in naval architecture as part of its graduate mechanical engineering degree. Courses include theory of marine propellers, theory of marine hydrodynamics, theory of ship structure analysis and dynamics of marine vehicles. Both master's and doctoral degrees are offered, and both require a final thesis before graduation. The program is affiliated with the Centre for Marine Vessel Development and Research, which provides hands-on research opportunities for students.
