A degree in counseling is a necessary step for individuals wishing to pursue a career in the counseling field. Many states and employers require a graduate degree in a specific type of counseling to be a licensed and practicing counselor. Colleges in all areas of the nation offering master's and doctoral degrees in counseling are available for prospective students.

    • University of Kansas offers both a master's program and a doctoral program in counseling psychology. The masters program at KU is typically completed in two years, while the doctoral program typically lasts five to six years and includes a required internship in professional psychology. As of the 2009 academic year, KU had a total enrollment of 30,004 students from all 50 states and 110 countries. The main campus of University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, Kansas.

    University of Florida

    • University of Florida offers doctoral degrees in marriage and family counseling, mental health counseling and counseling psychology. UF also offers master's programs in marriage and family counseling, mental health counseling, as well as school counseling and guidance. UF is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities that belong to the Association of American Universities.     • University of Oregon offers a counseling psychology doctoral program. The program emphasizes an ecological model of training, research and practice, which makes it one of the few programs in the nation using this model. University of Oregon's counseling psychology program is also the eighth oldest continuously accredited counseling psychology program in the country. University of Oregon has been open since 1876 and is located in Eugene, Oregon.

    University of Maryland

    • University of Maryland offers a master's program for school counseling. The counseling program at UM is in partnership with local school districts and prepares future counselors to work with children from kindergarten through high school. In the fall of 2009, UM had a total enrollment of 37,146 students. University of Maryland is located in College Park, Maryland.
