Atlantic Intercontinental University (AIU) also offers an online master's degree in sociology. Students can pursue either a master of arts or a master of science in the field. AIU differs from other programs in that students can essentially create their own plan of study by pursuing courses in other fields to give their degree a wholly new emphasis if they choose to do so. Typical topics covered by the AIU online program include the introduction to social movements, urban sociology, 20th century educational thought, quantitative methods, urban poverty, among others. Potential students should be cautious and note that AIU is not regionally accredited with a regional accreditation body approved by the U.S. Board of Education. Instead, the university has opted for private accreditation through the Accrediting Commission International (ACI). Private accreditation is less common and less desirable among the academic community.
