Online Colleges for Phlebotomists

Phlebotomists are trained medical professionals who draw samples of blood from patients for tests and transfusions, perform ventipuncture and assist patients with lab results. Hundreds of associate-level and bachelor's programs are offered by community colleges and four-year universities. These programs offer medical assisting and medical technician degree programs which train students to perform phlebotomy procedures. While most of these programs are offered by on-campus schools, a handful of institutions offer online programs for phlebotomists.

    • Keiser University, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university offers an online associate-level degree in medical assisting which provides extensive phlebotomy and clinical lab courses and training. According to Keiser University, graduates of the program are qualified to perform a variety of phlebotomy and clinical procedures, including "assisting in minor surgical procedures, giving injections, performing venipuncture and assisting in laboratory operations." Student are required to take 36.5 credit hours of medical assisting courses, including clinical and laboratory procedures essential to the practice of phlebotomy. Online courses are delivered via a centralized management system on an asynchronous (archived) schedule, giving students the flexibility to log in and learn whenever they choose.

    University of Cincinnati

    • The University of Cincinnati, a large public research university located in Cincinnati, Ohio, offers an online undergraduate degree in clinical laboratory science which prepares students to perform the full range of phlebotomy procedures. In addition to a required slate of general education courses, students are required to take clinical lab and phlebotomy courses in the following areas: clinical body fluids, clinical hematology and phlebotomy, clinical practice and clinical immunohematology for phlebotomists. Online courses are delivered via a web-based platform which streams recorded lectures, giving students the ability to view learning materials at their convenience. In addition to lectures, students have online access to assignments, research materials, lab resources and support services.

    South University

    • South University, which has a main campus in Savannah, Georgia, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school offers an online associate-level degree in health science which trains students to perform entry-level phlebotomy clinical procedures. Student are required to take 34 credit hours of core courses for this major. These classes include pathophysiology, anatomy and physiology for phlebotomists and lab workers, and medical terminology for clinical procedures. Online courses are offered on an asynchronous schedule, giving students the ability to learn when it is most convenient for them.
