Online Colleges for a Registered Dietician

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to become a dietician an individual must usually have at least a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, or a related area. Those who pass an exam regulated by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association are awarded with the registered dietician (RD) credential. There are a number of reputable universities that offer online programs in dietetics.
  1. Eastern Michigan University

    • Eastern Michigan University (EMU), College of Health and Human Services was established in 1849. The university has an actual campus; however, you can also earn your dietetics degree online. EMU's School of Health Sciences offers six specific professional programs, including Dietetics and Human Nutrition.

      The Bachelor of Science in Dietetics is for those who do not have an undergraduate degree in dietetics and wish to become a registered dietician. This program can be done on campus or online. The Master's of Science in Human Nutrition is only available online and is for those who want to become a registered dietician plus obtain an advanced degree. The curricula for EMU's on-campus program and online program are identical.

    Kansas State University

    • Since 1986, Kansas State University has ranked first among Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Udall and Goldwater scholarships, winning over $2 million in those competitions as of March 2010. Consequently, Kansas State is among the nation's elite universities.

      Kansas State University has two Bachelor of Science programs in Dietetics. Both the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) and the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) include the supervised practice internship required to take the national RD exam. Both programs qualify the student to take national RD exam.

      The curricula for both programs vary slightly. For instance, the CPD includes courses such as Communication Competencies in Dietetics Practice, which are not included in the DPD. The CPD requires 127 credits for graduation while the DPD requires 125.

    University of Northern Colorado

    • The University of Northern Colorado was founded in 1889 and has over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs. According to the university, generally 96 percent of its graduates are employed or attend graduate school within a year of graduating.

      The university has an online Distance Dietetics Program (DDP), which offers nine courses online. The remainder of courses must be taken at a regionally accredited school where the student lives or transfers to. If he already has a bachelor's degree in dietetics, he can complete the requirements for the DPD online. He must enter the DPD program to be able to apply for dietetic internships while preparing to become a registered dietician.
