Nutrition Degree Colleges

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for nutritionists will increase by nine percent from 2008 through 2018. A number of colleges in the United States grant undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field. Carrying the approval of the American Dietetic Association's Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, these colleges prepare graduates to take the Registered Dietitian certification exam, offered through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  1. University of Delaware

    • "U.S. News and World Report" recently ranked the University of Delaware among the top 100 universities in the United States. This public college has more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students at its suburban, 968-acre campus.

      The university offers three degree programs in nutrition. The bachelor of science program in applied nutrition is intended to provide students with a background in nutrition, health and exercise science or food service management. For those who want to be dietitians, a bachelor's of science program in dietetics is offered. Those who intend to continue studying at the master's degree level in nutrition typically first complete the bachelor's of science degree program in nutritional sciences. This program focuses heavily upon biology, chemistry and other scientific fields related to eating. A little more than one-third of all students at the University of Delaware receive some type of financial aid, according to "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    College of Saint Benedict

    • Founded by the Benedictine Order of the Roman Catholic Church, the College of Saint Benedict is a private institution for women. The school was recently ranked among the top 20 liberal arts colleges by "U.S. News and World Report."

      Students in the college's bachelor of science program in nutrition have the option to concentrate in dietetics, nutrition science or food studies. All students must take classes in theology in order to graduate. Nutrition majors also have the option to complete community service or service learning projects for course credit. Approximately 98 percent of all freshmen and 67 percent of all continuing students are provided with some type of financial aid, according to "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    Pepperdine University

    • Located in Malibu, California, Pepperdine University is affiliated with the Church of Christ. The school was recently ranked among the top 100 national universities in the nation by "U.S. News and World Report." Admission to the school is highly selective; according to "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges," only one-third of those who apply receive an invitation to attend.

      The university's bachelor of science program in nutritional science includes coursework in general and organic chemistry, communication, psychology, microbiology and bio-statistics. The nutrition department encourages students to participate in a summer study abroad program, and travel options include Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, China and Argentina.
